Maria Ivanova

Maria Ivanova is the Studio Owner and Founder of DF Dance Studio, a longtime Utah dance community leader, an early New York Style Salsa educator in Utah, and a West Coast Swing Competitive All-Star.

  • Founded DF in 2008
  • Salsa On2 since 2005
  • West Coast Swing since 2019
  • Competitive All-Star
  • Still trains and competes

Maria built DF Dance Studio to give adults in Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, and across Utah a welcoming place to start dancing, improve with real structure, and become part of a strong social dance community. Today she continues to guide the studio’s overall vision while focusing heavily on the growth of West Coast Swing at DF.

Background

A Long View of Social Dance in Utah

Maria has been dancing and teaching Salsa On2 since 2005 and was one of the early teachers to help bring New York Style Salsa to Utah. Her work helped shape a stronger technical and social foundation for many dancers entering the local scene.

Before focusing on West Coast Swing, Maria also specialized in Argentine Tango, adding another layer of partnership, precision, and movement study to her dance background. In 2019, she began focusing more deeply on West Coast Swing and has continued to train, travel, and compete in the style ever since.

That long arc across Salsa, Tango, and West Coast Swing is part of what makes her perspective distinctive: she looks at dance not only as social fun, but also as a craft that can be studied, refined, and taught with clarity.

Teaching Philosophy

Body Mechanics, Movement Anatomy, and Real Connection

Maria’s teaching philosophy centers on body mechanics, the anatomy of movement, and the technique of creating connection. Rather than teaching dance as a memorized list of patterns, she works to help students understand what their body is doing, why movement works, and how better awareness creates better dancing.

That means a strong emphasis on posture, timing, alignment, elasticity, direction, and partnership. Students who work with Maria often appreciate that her coaching goes deeper than surface choreography and helps them become more efficient, more connected, and more intentional dancers.

Community Work

Building More Than Classes

Maria’s leadership has gone beyond teaching classes. She has helped build teacher training programs, dance teams, weekly socials, and structured pathways that allow dancers to improve, connect, and stay involved over time.

That community-building focus is one of the reasons DF has remained meaningful to so many adult students: it offers not just instruction, but a place to return to, practice in, and build relationships through dance.

Local Dance Community

Why This Matters in Utah

For adults in Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake, finding a studio that offers both clear instruction and a real social environment can make the difference between trying dance once and actually staying with it. Maria’s work at DF has helped create that longer-term path.

That combination of classes, teams, socials, and teacher development is part of what gives DF a stronger identity than a simple drop-in studio model.
